Why characters in Naruto run the way they do?
Does it make them run faster or something?

I always thought that ninjas ran faster than regular people do and it would be more aerodynamic for them to do do with their arms behind them but it probably has something to do with the creation prices, ie easier to animate, aesthetics, etc.

Well, everyone in Naruto loves Sonic the Hedgehog and if you know anything about Sonic, you'll know he runs like that. Every Shinobi and Kunoichi hold Sonic in the highest regard and wish to mimic him in each way. Pain did this very well.

It's easier to tween a bobbing model from the chest up when you don't have to worry about his arms moving--and it still gives the impression that he's running. There's a great wealth of history regarding cost saving animating measures that were so prevalent that they're still used today in larger budget studios only because it's what's ingrained in our expectations.

You may find your answer if you spend a day running as they do. I highly recommend doing it, as it is also slightly fun.

For people saying it's more aerodynamic and faster? You're wrong. Stop saying that. Your arms serve a very specific purpose when running. Not moving them SLOWS you down.

Exactly, you don't see track stars running like this because it's definitely not the best way to run.

It's my theory that they do it (yes it's easier to draw) so they have their hands free for attacks and hand signs - if they can run without using their arms they're better equipped to use their hands for things while running

Well, make an easy experiment. Take a long umbrella (or something else sword-size) into your hand and try running with normal hand motions... and not stab yourself.
Thats my interpretation. Ninjas run around with sharp pointy things in the hands all the time....

I used to do track and running the way shinobi do in Naruto is a very slow and terrible way of running. To be honest you have a chance of planting your face on the pavement by not having that proper momentum giving by moving your arms. Really want to run faster? Try running with your palms open, arms at 90 degrees the whole time, and only moving your shoulders while running. Also when when your arm is in front of you, drop it harshly. This momentum will cause you to go faster since you are putting gravity in your favor. So no whoever is saying "oh yea it does make you faster you should try it" NO, it does not make your faster, Naruto is a work of fiction, enough.

I've pondered this as well. I figured it out in a pool. Get to a point in the pool where everything except your head is in the pool. Then run. Your hands are pushed backwards and knees are pumping up. Just like how the characters run.

Less air resistance could be a factor. So, yes, slightly faster.
